Uncovering Your Unconventionality

Uncovering Your Unconventionality

In a society that favors conventionality, I’ve found that the fashion and art which highlights unconventionality impacts me the most. Think: artistic movements of the 70’s-90’s, like Arte Povera, Pop Art, Contemporary Art and Fashion, and Avant Garde Art and Fashion. Artists and Fashion designers were passionate about being different and challenging societal norms. Their messages are so powerful; they leave me with a strong reminder that my voice matters, and it is heard.

Art and fashion often communicate beauty within the unconventional better than words can, and over time, I think they will change how our society functions as a whole. their messages teach us to embrace our uniqueness, individuality, and what makes us unconventional. They dismantle standards and labels of what is “normal”.

How do they send these messages, and how will future designers continue to do so? Designers around the world have used creative methods of story telling to communicate these messages, such as the use of alternative runway locations, specific runway music, window-display tactics, even down to the way the models walk on the runway. All of these aspects play a vital role in communicating key messages behind a collection and the designers’ incentives behind it. My blog will spotlight these various tactics, and analyze how and if they’ve left an impact on designers, brands, and generally; the fashion industry as a whole.

I believe that anyone is capable of anything once they silence self doubt; once they stop fearing conventional definitions of success, skill or beauty.

Through this blog, I want to highlight the designers that use strategic, innovative communication to inspire us all to stand out; to embrace our own success, skill and beauty within our unconventionality. By doing so, I hope I can remind my audience of their capabilities and strengths within their unconventionality.
